the way of the race

July 23rd, 2008

hellyes.jpgIf you haven’t seen vid of Cadel clawing his way up those final, awful alpine slopes today …

well ~ you just don’t love bike racing enough.

-

And how lovely was it, that the same morning this sweetest, roughest grand tour battle in years, swashbuckling its way up d’Huez … we see announced a new, an inclusive, an expanding Tour of California route spidering its way into new towns, new territories, new markets.

Yes, cycling is on it’s way up.

- - - - -

ooooooooo.jpgBut what in the world are we going to do with Bernard Kohl?

I mean ~ this guy is half-guppy, half-orangootang on a bike.  There hasn’t been this much coyote-ugly on 2-wheels since Fernando Escartin crab-jabbed his way up Sestriere against the one-ball’d wonderLance.

Still, this kid is growing aces in my book.  I liked how he almost asked for permission to set pace over the KOM at Cwaw-duh-Fehr … taking his PolkaPoints, but deferring to the CSC threshing machine.  He’s no Virenque, that Bernard.  good on’em for it.

-

… and what a CSC display today, indeed.  Still, it will take the most heroic of time trials for Sastre to win this race.

-

as it should be.

- - -

youmakeitpodunk.jpgAnd speaking of fugly’in up the bikeworld … what’s with showing up to the SLO-Podium so RiccoEscrubbaEsquela?

i mean, if you’re going to play pro-bike racer, you might as well make the rudimentary efforts of showing kit and accessories on the show-steps, don’t you think?  Somebody did buy all that stuff for you, didn’t they Ricco?

It looks like Escuela is just out of jail and RockRacing’s young gun Finneran is on his way to it. All scowl and horsemeat for that so-cal youngster.  right on.

Although i must say i am becoming more a convert to R&R’s musical-chairs of bike race costumery.

keeps you on your toes.

-

At least DHolla’s got his ghettofabulous gig going strong. Those lemonade-shades have me smiling backwards in appreciation.  Hollowheed shows that you can be a kookpot-original without snubbing the hand that feeds.

-

respect the race, or don’t take the payout, yo.

- - - - -

what the vandevelde?

tentatively_epic.jpgwho cares whether VdV gets on the podium.  Let’s just hope one-thousand percent that this is what clean racing can be at the pinnacle of the sport.  Let’s just hope.

the question will be …

will aMErica ever be sophisticated enough to adore effort over domination.

-

we are a country that loves winners.  trite though that statement may be, it doesn’t take away from the very, very real-world ramifications of our addiction to destination over journey.

Vandevelde has displayed courage, determination, and an intense willingness to try and be the best.

-

that IS the best.

This year’s Tour is elegant in it’s uncertainty. Why else would we get up at 3:30am to watch eyes half-open, and leave for work late…

Speculation down this way on the Tour of Cali’s Queen-Stage
skippage is that there will be landslides galore this year closing the road each storm in Big Sur.

    VdV:

You just wish that someone gave him the passenger seat to learn a few tricks before we put him on the spot, the poor guy.

He is already dreaming about next year knowing he is getting the crash course in the spotlight with this one….

You can tell he is taking notes, can tell he is bummed that he has be cruising to the finishes with the laughing pack and not experiencing the ins-n-outs of the last 15k of most crucial stages.

aMErica will be a lot more excited for him next year I am sure, hope Garmin still loves him by then and hasn’t hired a ringer to tour the french roads….

Didn’t know if I should go for a cigarette, a drink, a cold shower or a nap after this morning’s stage. Absolutely-freakin-beautiful bike racing.

Finneran gained, like, I dunno, 20lbs since I raced against him last at Garret Lemire. I wondered out loud what his mom’s been feeding him, and someone suggested he probably just hit puberty.

Big result for him at SLO. That race was stoopid fast.

Yeah, one must hit podium with the spandex kit. Shows respect for the sponsors, the sport, the fans so they can point you out at the next bike race. I doubt it was done on purpose, but we really really need to keep our kits on during picture podium time. Respect man. You give, you get it back. Period.

That squeaky Aussie ain’t pretty, but he knows how to race. And when I say he knows how to race, I mean his head is really in the game. CSC/Saxo have been spanking him right and left, and he has not done a stupid thing yet. It would have been easy to blow up going after something he did not need to follow, or by trying to prove a point a la Lance, but no, he wants to win, and he knows who he is. If you’re not thinking of what is really going on, he seems boring, but man, either he’s extremely lucky or there are more gears turning in his head than between his legs.

And, about the comment about Garmin dropping VDV for a ringer. Seems like he is the ringer other teams will try to snake.

On another note, seems different that these are not just drag races up the hills, but instead there is attacking followed by suffering, then caution. Hmmm?

Dare I say this is what clean or maybe cleaner cycling looks like. Rumor has it guppie monkey man Kohl passed out after crossing the line. Whoa! Gutsy move by the old man Sastre, even if it was his only move to make. We shall see if the yellow jersey makes you a top time trialist.

Can’t say I have enjoyed anything more than watching VDV realize that he is a grand tour contendor on the grandest of stages. He put in a valiant effort at the end of today’s stage. I hope he puts on a clinic on Saturday.

Let’s hope for a clean finish

Kohl needs a good set of braces for those teeth. I think he’s won enough Euro’s with the KOM stuff to pay for something.

Kohl does “swim” up mountains doesn’t he? That’s a unique climbing style, but whatever works!!

PC had my favorite quote re. today’s stage. It came when Andy was ~3kms from the top, climbing all easy, checking out the views, & generally cruisin’ like it twarn’t no thang:

    “Andy is fucking sightseeing!

    And meanwhile behind him…

Yeah, the guppie is a weird climber, but he’s good. All I seem to accomplish with flailing like that is an even higher heart rate.

I kinda miss the ascents of the Cucaracha Soler from last year. It’s a bummer he had to pull out early. Would have been fun to see him and Kohl side by side.

    Good post!

I just wonder what song is playing in Kohl’s head. Regardless, that kid can climb.
And VdV - there are no words… he is amazing.
