I’ve been sent word that NorCalHistorian CaseyK has tossed some dinosaur blog-action of the past up on the interwebs.
NCNCA newsletters from the days just before Lemond changed the spandex-verse by going pro and forcing baseball hats upon us all.
awesome stuff.
-
stories, pictures, stats, and love of the bike.
i’ll see if casey wants the web location tossed about … but, in the meantime, check out this advert page sliced from a 1980 edition of the NorCalNewsletter day Cycling (thanks Egan!).

Now when’s the last time …
you think a Specialized ad cost $15?

go Wheelsmith!

um, isn’t $15 the price of the ad? silly boy!
ignore that. silly girl!
my first “new” bike was a specialized hard rock in 1990. I think it cost about $150. I sold it in 2000 for $100. not a bad deal at all. of course, I didn’t really ride it.
Be sure to check out the cover photo of the finish line at Nevada City that is on the July 76 newsletter. Talk about the spectators packed into the old finish line area.
I miss Wheelsmith. That shop was the best.
I want to know what the ‘Aero-dynamic clothing’ advertised by TBO looked like.
Probably referring lycra clothing. Remember in that year Wool was still the standard for clothing.
I’m sorry I’m so dense… what/where is the link to this great memorabilia? Thanks.
Go to http://idisk.mac.com/casey_k-Public?view=web and then the scanned newsletters folder and you can see which newsletters are available for download.
Thank you Casey! Brings back tons of memories… I was an intermediate and junior back then (’75-’79) in the great state of Northern California. Shocking to see the entry fees for races back then. $1.50 to …gasp… $5.50! Also somber to remember so many great venues and events lost to the history books: Pacific Grove, Crockett-Martinez, Tassajara, Capitola,…
I’m eager to see the remainder of the newsletters from 1978 and ’79, if you have them.
Also, if you want to archive any additional NCNCA memorabilia, I can send you jpegs of a couple cool full-size posters, including race ads for Nevada City (’77) and La Contienda de las Colinas (sp?) from mid-to-late 70′s. I’ve also got two full-size picture-posters with the 1981 NCNCA race schedules. Let me know if interested.
Marco,
Sure I’m interested in adding what you have. I’m adding additional newsletters as I have time to scan stuff in and bandwidth to upload it. Once I get done scanning all the smaller newsletters I have then I have to figure out how to scan the newsprint versions which are just a tad to big to scan with my current scanner.
