Is it tacky and unoriginal to blog about Michael Jackson right now? Yes. Guess who is both tacky and unoriginal? Me.
Anyway, I have a theory that Michael Jackson is as much a part of bike racing as our fancy carbon fiber rigs and our ridiculous spandex outfits. Feel free to refute this, but I highly doubt a single one of you has avoided throwing Michael Jackson onto your ITT warmup mix at some point in your career.
I’ll even go so far as to say, the next time you crack and get dropped in a bike race, it is probably because you didn’t listen to “Smooth Criminal” on your drive to the course. Hell, Laurent Fignon lost the ‘89 Tour by 8 seconds because he had not heard “Black or White” yet. True story.
To commemorate the career of this timeless singer and bizarre man, I would like to request some “Thriller” on the PA system at the Burlingame Crit this weekend, during the P/1/2 race. Let’s see how far the influence this blog really extends.
Oh, In case you’re wondering…Farrah Fawcett has nothing to do with bike racing, as far as I can tell. But if you can find a way to work her in at Burlingame, bonus points to you. My guess is the other famous Michael that we all love will come dressed as Farrah. Yes, thats right. Hernando, in a blonde wig. It’s not out of the ordinary.
Goodnight Y’all.
