NorCal Championships: Or should we just call it the Strawberry Show

NorCal’s version of Jeanie Longo, Karen Brems – an actual former Longo rival, won the women’s championship.  While pushing 50 Brems has the Masters World CX Championships on her 2011-12 agenda, and for those that know her, she is hard to dislodge once her goal is locked in her sights.

On the Men’s side Andy Jacques Maynes showed up to take the win over an attenuated field which was missing the two most dominant characters of the year, Scotty Chapin and Aaron Bradford.  If the race was any indicator AJM might have gained the fire he needed to move up a level after getting dropped by the Bissell squad.  He tackled Sunday’s race after a short team training camp, hang over, and with almost no cx races, if any, in his legs.  The sleeping giant is waking, and right behind him was a screaming junior….

“In a late lap, Tobin Ortenblad also rode the entire run-up of Toro Park’s front course, passing AJM, and briefly leading the race.”  ~ IMAGR

    LA Cyclocross

California’s only, or at least biggest, UCI race was on in LA this weekend.  The big guns like Tim Johnson, Ben Berden, and NorCal’s Chris Jones showed up.  Jones put in strong rides to place third both days. On day one Cody Kaiser (7 )made the top 10, while Gorry (4), Sherril (7th), Dimple (9), and Maile (10) all busted into the top 10 in the women’s field.   On day 2 Kaiser made the podium (5th) and was joined in the top ten by Aaron Bradford (7th).  The women’s field shook out pretty much the same for NorCal with Gorry topping out the NorCal crew at 5th followed by Maile (10th).

Now i’m sure nobody pays any attention but the SoCal fools have been trying to bait everybody, on the NCCN comments section, into going to Bakersfield for the NorCal vs SoCal championships. Please take time to respond and heckle them accordingly.

Here is a shout out for NorCal Women’s racer Ellen Sherrill (Bike Station Aptos) for finishing seventh on Day 1 of LA Cyclocross and 12th on Day 2.

Another shout out is due Tobin Ortenblad (Cal Giant Berry Farms/Specialized) for his second place, behind Andy Jacques Maynes, in the NCNCA District Cyclocross Championships. In a late lap, Ortenblad also rode the entire run-up of Toro Park’s front course, passing AJM, and briefly leading the race.

I believe Tobin rode the run up during the juniors race. I never saw him clean the run up in the afternoon. He tried a couple of times then opted to carry after that.

Although not eligible for the District Championships, Team CyclesFANATIC.com U23 rider Jakub Magnusek finished an astounding 3rd place after a back row start, bridging to a select group, making a couple of key selections, and a final lap attack distancing himself from 4th place finisher (and Masters 35+ Winner) Justin Robinson by bunny-hopping the log barrier at full speed and going full-throtle the last kilometer to the finish. Look out for this up-and-comer. This was his 3rd Cross race ever because he usually has a long World Cup mtb season and takes a break in Winter. On a side-note the fast Euro-style course favored Cross-specific bikes, but Jakub raced on a FANATIC Carbon 29er set-up for Cross with a FANATIC full carbon fork and disc brakes with flat bars and skinny nobbies.
