At the Central Coast Cyclo-Cross Series finale, Sofia Gomez-Villafane (Ibis/Buy-cell.com) doubled-up with wins in Junior and Elite Women. In the latter, Gomez-Villafane took the early lead and proceeded to stretch out the gap over second place. “I was super-nervous.” said Gomez-Villafane, “In my mind I was thinking what if I get a flat, when am I going to crash. The more I kept on going I saw that the gap kept on getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Then I cooled down on the last lap.” Mary Ellen Ash (Bay 101/Rocklobster) gained second place late in the race. Josie Jaques-Maynes (CalGiant) took the third step of the podium with Michelle Melka (RED Racing) in fourth.
In the Elite Men race, Cody “Kid” Kaiser and Tobin Ortenblad (both California Giant Cycling/Specialized) tuned up for their trip to Europe, after their recent selection to the US World Cyclocross Championship team. Andy Jaques-Maynes (California Giant Cycling/Specialized) controlled the lead for the first lap but Kaiser and Ortenblad quickly closed the gap at the very end of the second. “They [Kaiser and Ortenblad] held my wheel the whole way,” said Jaques-Maynes. The middle of the race saw the lead shared amongst the three Cal Giant racers. As the race progressed, Jaques-Maynes started edging out the gap again eventually going on to take the win. Kaiser secured second while Ortenblad found himself dropped on the last lap to finish in third.
