15th Mariposa (formely Kern) Women’s Stage Race
    Basso Bridge ITT

This year’s Mariposa Women’s Stage Race began today with the Basso Bridge Individual Time Trial. Some 23 miles to the east of Modesto, the location may have been considered obscure. However, after the day’s cycling, at least a dozen racers sauntered into the Tuolumne River flowing past the registration/parking area. Partially shaded by the Basso Bridge and nearby tree growth, the water was a welcome reward after a nifty, 10-mile time trial on the warm, sunny day.

There are 95 racers competing across six categories in this stage race. Two registrants are from Fort Collins, Colorado with another from Springfield, Oregon. To name just a few, some of the Northern California-Northern Nevada racers entered include Rikke Preisler (Metromint Cycling), Jane Despas, Molly Van Houweling (Metromint Cycling), plus top-five finishers from last week’s Cat’s Hill – Marissa Axell (Touchstone Climbing) and Nicole Justice (Steven’s Bikes p/b Pactimo).

The time-trial course is out-and-back with modest elevation changes. “The hills were short,” said Axell, “not too steep. Just nice to power over, providing a really solid downhill. There was quite a bit of a stiff head wind on the way out but there was a nice tail wind on the way back.” Axell credited Velo Promo with finding a good race course. A “fishing” bridge, 2 miles into the outward leg, had its own version of du Maurier’s The Birds, sans Tippi Hedren. Each cast of a fishing line scattered literally hundreds of swallows nesting on the underside the bridge, seeing them rampantly fly just over head. There must have been a low tide as no attacks were reported.
