I love how Cal Cup closely mirrors the Olympics. Cal Cup will give my life meaning now that I can’t watch race walking, fencing, and rhythmic gymnastics. Rhythmic gymnastics made me want to take a shower – those sequins gave me Interbike flashbacks all over again.
We have some reports coming from Dunnigan RR and Suisun Crit once Imagr get settled later today. Bill Nicely’s new team, Steven’s Pactimo, is beating up folks in this years series. While the legendary Molly Van Houweling (Metromint) took the Dunnigan RR, she was trailed by Marley Smith (2nd) and Amy Thornquist (4th) who sucked up Cal Cup points for the Steven’s crew. Then on Sunday, Steven’s rider Mary Ellen Ash took a win at Suisun Crit showing she still has good form after her stint doing the Tour of Dairyland this summer.
Amy Thornquist and Fiona Strouts currently lead the standings but with with less than 21 points separating the top 10 it’s anybody’s game. It is too early to make a call despite Steven’s strong showing. Whenever I see Jane Despas lurking in the standings you know it’s gonna get tricky. In an omnium points series like this experience helps preserve and protect a lead no matter how slim it might be. If Despas can carve out a few points in one of the upcoming races she can hang on based in grit and determination.
