    25 August 2012

Marley Smith (Stevens Bike’s p/b Pactimo) went off the front twice, crossed the finish line solo, and won the race for Women 1-2-3 at the Winters Road Race. Mary Elizabeth Maroon took the field sprint for second ahead of Nicole Justice (Steven’s Bikes p/b Pactimo).

Smith said her team’s goal for the race was to get on the podium. “I was protecting another rider,” reported Smith, “we [Steven's Bikes] have some great some great climbers and I was hoping they would bridge across to me. They did on lap two. Then, when I attacked again, the other girls didn’t get organized to chase me down quick enough and I got a big gap. I was still hoping that some of my climbers would come across.”

Smith’s margin of victory was 2 seconds shy of 2 minutes. Less than the length of a bike covered second, third, and fourth places as Maroon battled Justice and Felica Gomez (Pinnacle Women’s Racing). Fifth place went to Joanne Bechtel (Metromint Cycling).

For Men Pro-1-2, Dana Williams (Team Mike’s Bikes) raced to his strength to win the race in a sprint finish. Joshua Carling (Michael David Winery Cycling Team) took second place with Max Jenkins (Competitive Cyclist) crossing in third.

Marc Pro-Strava and Metromint had racers off the front early with James LaBerge (Team Mike’s Bikes) chasing. “We were marking Marc Pro-Strava all day and we thought [the early break] was going to go away,” commented Williams, “But it came back and we had to go from there. There was that break of two guys off, one of ours [Hank Scholtz] and Keith Hillier; they were off for a whole lap and then we got neutralized so I think they got a good gap on us”

“I think our guy Hank had a mechanical so we went to the front on the last lap and brought the Marco Pro guy back,” continued Williams, “I knew sprinting was my strength. Tyler [Brandt] did some really good work to pull things back and then I just ended up getting it at the line.”
