You know who I like? Phil Mooney! He sends me occasional emails saying he digs our stuff and then goes out of his way to send me his roster. That’s totally classy in a looking out for the local peeps kinda way.
“I figured I should send it in because we now have 2 NorCal riders, myself (SF) and BJM (Santa Cruz). Ben and I plan on doing a few NCNCA races this year. Other guys will probably come race locally a couple times too when theyr’e out visiting us.
I’m especially looking forward to local races since I haven’t done many the last 2 years. Now that many of my friends ride for mikes bikes, I look forward to having an entire team to fight out there!” ~ Phil Mooney
Northvale, N.J. – After a successful 2012 racing season with victories and podiums at stage races such as the Tour of the Gila, Cascade Cycling Classic, and Vuelta Ciclista de Chile, the team is back with an exciting new schedule, six new riders, and a new co-title sponsor. Jamis Bicycles, Hagens Berman L.L.C., and Sutter Home Family Vineyards will team up as sponsors in 2013 for the long-standing U.S.-based team which will be known as the Team Jamis – Hagens Berman presented by Sutter Home Professional Cycling Team.
Director Sportif Sebastian Alexandre has assembled a roster of riders capable of competing in the biggest races on the U.S. racing calendar. “I am pleased to have built a very diverse team,” states Alexandre. “We will have a strong team in every race we attend, with our main goal for the 2013 season to be back in races like the Tour of California, Tour of Utah, and the U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado.”
The team has been strengthened by the off-season addition of six news riders. These riders are Juan Jose Haedo, Ben Jaques-Maynes, Janier Acevedo, Ruben Companiono, Chase Pinkham, and Gabriel Varela. Joining them will be a core squad of nine returning riders including Demis Aleman, Luis Romero Amaran, Jamey Driscoll, Carson Miller, Philip Mooney, Guido Palma, Eric Schildge, Kyle Wamsley, and Tyler Wren.
Juan Jose Haedo, returning to the team after six years spent racing in Europe at the WorldTour level with Team Saxo Bank, will step into the role of road captain for the team in 2013. “J.J. is one of the best sprinters in the world at the moment,” says Alexandre. “He has the ability to succeed in any type of race, whether it’s a long and tough road race or a one hour criterium.” Haedo has seen success in many diverse races around the world, ranging from his tally of five wins at the Tour of California to winning major flat criteriums such as the Tour of Somerville, Sunny King, and Manhattan Beach.
The team’s GC aspirations will be bolstered by the addition of the recent KOM winner of the Tour of Utah, Ben Jacques-Maynes, and the Colombian climbing ace, Janier Acevedo. They will lead the team in hilly stage races along with returning rider and 2010 NRC Champion, Luis Amaran. “Luis was our only GC rider for the past few years,” says Sebastian. “I have brought Ben and Janier to the team to have more options in the stage races. Luis and Ben have shown their strength and power battling one another over the years. I am very excited to see how their skills complement each other while racing on the same team.”
Ruben Companiono, a young Cuban rider who defected from his native country this past summer, could prove to be a big surprise for everyone this season. “Ruben is young and clearly has loads of talent,” states Sebastian. “He is a former Pan American champion on the track and his father was one of the best Cuban cyclist in the ’80’s. Just like Luis Amaran and Ivan Dominguez, Ruben has chosen to come to America, leaving everything else behind, to pursue his professional cycling dreams with our team.”
Chase Pinkham and Gabe Varela are both young riders that have shown much promise and potential. Alexandre is looking for them to grow and develop as racers for the team in the coming year. These riders will join the rest of the returning team members to help deliver wins for the squad in 2013. “I am excited to get the racing started,” exclaims Sebastian, who notes that the team will start racing in a month at the UCI 2.1 Tour of San Luis. “It will be great to have the guys together at our Tucson training camp in February and get the momentum rolling for what I expect to be our most successful year ever.”
