• Pre-Nats Chat With NorCal CX’er Cody Kaiser

Cody Kaiser (Cal Giant/Specialized) will be among the NorCal representatives at Cyclocross Nationals in Wisconsin this weekend.  He will be competing in the Under-23 race on Saturday against class riders like Zane Godby (Clif Bar Development Cross Team), Richard Cypress Gorry (Whole Athlete-Specialized), Kerry Warner (BMC U23 Development MTB Team, fellow NorCal upstart Tobin Ortenblad (Cal Giant/Specialized), and the experienced Yannick Eckmann (Cal Giant/Specialized).  Eckmann cut his teeth in a number of Elite races this year, hanging with the obligatory Tim Johnson/Ryan Trebon/Jeremy Powers supergroup before the veterans floored it in the latter stages of the races.  With news that Zach McDonald (Rapha-Focus) will be competing for the stars-and-stripes jersey in the Elite category, Cody Kaiser will be vying for the coveted U-23 crown.

I had the opportunity to chat with Kaiser amidst the din of riders on trainers at the California Giant Berry/Specialized mini-camp at Specialized Headquarters in Morgan Hill.  We hung out and talked about bunny-hopping barriers, the extremes of Belgian cyclocross tradition, finesse on the cyclocross course, his favorite NorCal ‘cross races, racing through beaches of sand in Europe, and moving towards the road world.  Kaiser was very gracious about my ignorance of his European cyclocross experience – Thanks for the chat Cody.
