The 2013 Bariani Road Race is coupled with the Land Park Criterium every year to provide a race weekend in close proximity to the state capitol. The race is sponsored by Bariani Olive Oil, which conjures images of rolling hills in Lombardy, but in reality much of the race is the flats of Zamora, with a 300 meter kicker that serves as a punchy finish. Wind shapes the race, favoring riders that attentively protect themselves in the crosswinds.
In the women’s race, Elle Anderson and Emily Kachorek of Vanderkitten attacked 2 miles into the race and sustained their breakaway all race long. Pinnacle p/b Argon 18 and Metromint were unable to organize a successful chase, turning Vanderkitten’s attempt to slink away early into an straightforward victory. Ruth Winder, also of Vanderkitten, displayed her quickness that won Land Park Criterium the day before, as she took the field sprint.

The men’s race exhibited numerous attacks throughout the race. One pair of escapees made it off the front as the race’s final kilometers closed in and Specialized worked hard to bring it back. It appeared that the two would be reeled in just before the finish. The two were reabsorbed right before the sprint, and Chuck Hutcheson of Marc Pro-Strava looked to be opening a sprint towards a decisive victory when Willie Myers of Fremont Bank came out from behind and drag raced Hutcheson to the line where Myers eventually seized the victory. Josh Carling of Bicycles Plus/Sierra Nevada was closely involved in the sprint and took 2nd place as Hutcheson faded slightly. Myers’ victory at Bariani is the 3rd race he has won this season, he has demonstrated that alongside Chuck Hutcheson, he is among NorCal’s best attacking sprinters.
