Mariposa Women’s Stage Race
13 May 2013
Many will recall the fatal accident that occurred at last year’s Mariposa Women’s Stage Race.
On the anniversary of that day, Suzanne Rivera remains in the minds of many.
“I have been hearing from several of our Nor Cal racing buddies,” coach of the B4T9 Women’s Cycling Team Jill Gass wrote by e-mail. “I have been asked if the team has moved on from Suzanne’s death. I think it is more accurate to say we continue to move through. Personally, I think about her everyday and, as the anniversary gets closer, I know many others are thinking of her as well.
“If you knew Suzanne you would know there is no better way to honor her than by getting out there, racing hard, and having fun. She was fairly new to bike racing but she had a very competitive athletic background and was having the time of her life at Mariposa.
“Her family is very private and did not want donations but did agree that we set up a scholarship in her name through the team. We gave a $1,000 scholarship to the Western Women’s Collegiate Cycling Conference in Suzanne’s name last year and plan to make that an annual award.
“So, on to Mariposa. It will be bittersweet for sure.”
The B4T9 Women’s Cycling Team is set to return to this year’s Mariposa Women’s Stage Race. Their web site has a rallying call: “let’s go and win it for Suzanne.” The Pinnacle p/b Argon 18 team will dedicate their weekend to Rivera.
