Bootjack Road Race
Stage 4, Mariposa Women’s Stage Race
19 May 2013
Katie Hall (Metromint Cycling) took over the P/1/2 Women’s general classification lead with her stage 2 win yesterday. Going into today’s fourth stage Bootjack Road Race, Hall held a 26-second lead over Felica Gomez (Pinnacle p/b Argon 18).
Jane Despas (Leopard-Sapporo), Tina Hughes (Hub Coffee Roasters p/b Tahoe Carson Radiology), Molly Van Houweling (Metromint Cycling), and Lisa Mueller (Metromint Cycling) respectively sat in third through sixth for GC, and were covered by 27 seconds.
Despas’ deficit to Hall was 96 seconds and, with just over 2 minutes covering the top six riders, a 60-mile race presented an opportunity for a shake up in GC. It was always going to be a difficult task, however, as Metromint Cycling had numbers to support their overall standings.
During the race, Gomez and Hughes put in multiple attacks to try and separate themselves from Hall but the ‘Mints team mates did indeed work well. Apart from dropping off a few riders, the Pro/1/2 Women’s field remained grupo compacto.
“[The race] was strategic and I just tried to watch the people twelve and 16 seconds back,” reported Hughes. “It was obvious that we weren’t going to get a break so we tried to chip away on the climbs.
“[Gomez and I] tried to push the tempo up the hills to erode everyone else’s legs and make that work in our favor. Towards the end it did. I jumped right at 200m because I knew the race was over before that final corner. I knew once I had a little gap there I didn’t think anyone else would come around.”
Hughes rounded the final corner in front and went on to a comfortable win with bike length’s to spare.
Hall took second place in the race, just ahead of Gomez, and with that finish she secured the general classification win by 32 seconds. Second overall went to Gomez with Hughes moving up to third after a DNF for Despas. Van Houweling was also promoted and took fourth place in the general classification. Lisa Mueller (Metromint Cycling) rounded out the top five from the weekend’s bicycle-racing.
