    Warnerville Time Trial
    2013 Cal Cup

    4 August 2013

Velo Promo’s 2013 running of its Cal Cup began Saturday morning with the Warnerville Time Trial. Still conditions and warm temperatures were on hand for the 20-mile, out-and-back course in the pastoral golden hills west of Yosemite. Late entrant but last year’s Cal Cup winner, for Elite 1/2/Pro, Justin Rossi (Marc Pro-Strava) was on hand to cheer team-mate Chris Harland-Dunaway beyond the start line.

Seven minutes later Rossi embarked on his winning ride, his 46’29.0″ would  hold as the day’s fastest time, fully 2’27” ahead of second-placed Adam Switters (Team Mike’s Bikes p/b Incase). Rossi’s time broke the course record, formerly held by Phil Mooney, by 20 seconds.  Conner Spencer (Giga OM-ARO Pistachios) finished with the day’s seventh fastest time but good enough to pick up the 10 Cal Cup points for third in Elite Men.

For Women 1/2/3, Leopard-Sapporo teammates Jane Despas and Sara Bird produced an excellent beginning for the Cal Cup campaign of the new NorCal Women’s team. Overcoming a stopped vehicle in front of her, at the metal bridge, Despas finished quickest at 56’7″ with Bird finishing third in a time of 58’53”. Flavia Oliviera (DNA/Plan 7), sporting her 2011 Tour of Gila skinsuit, split the Leopard-Sapporo riders with an effort of 56’50”.

With the day’s third fastest time, Michael Buckley (Folsom Bike/VW/Raley’s) took honours for Master 35+ 1/2/3. Jason Benford (Giga OM-ARO Pistachios) was fastest for Category 3 Men. Complete results are posted.
