The end is nigh track fans. The Hellyer Team Pursuit Program has landed in LA and they will be looking for gold this year. The 2013 USA Cycling Elite Timed Track Nationals starts on Friday, and NorCal has sent an army of racers to bring us medals, honor and glory. I caught up with the program manager, Michael Hernandez, on the NCCN Primetime Podcast a few days before he took off for LA to be with his team. I wanted to learn more about this years crop of riders, and get details on the programs inception and growth. The HTPP has done an exemplary job of introducing both men and women to the track, and driving them towards a lofty goal, the 2016 Olympics. Check them out on Facebook if you can… they are looking lean and fast this year. Hernandez also briefly discusses Beth Newell’s recent trip to Europe, where she raced for the US National team and at an UCI track event in Italy.
NCCN Podcast with Hellyer Team Pursuit
After listening to the podcast it will be hard to resist getting down to Hellyer for some racing or training. I can’t recommend it highly enough, for riders of all abilities. It’s like adding a scope to your hunting rifle. Track racing helps everything come into focus. Riders that spend time on the track tend to be cagier, and faster, when it counts. Trackies quickly learn the art of when to “let the arrow fly.” If you don’t know what I mean you should be first in line. Go to ridethetrack.com for more info on racing and training at Hellyer Velodrome.
Racing at Elite Time Nats gets started tomorrow morning with the individual pursuit, and kilo, and then moves onto the Omnium in the afternoon. The Team Pursuit races will get started on Sunday around 10 AM. I’m hoping an intrepid individual decides to stream the races and send everybody the link. Check here for the full Elite Time Track Nationals Schedule
Also of note, many of the Hellyer riders in LA right now, like Beth Newell, will be heading across the country for the Mass Start Championships.

I want to get the world out on Pooja Shannon Bhatia who is racing at Junior Track Worlds in Glasgow right now. As a junior she has to pay a portion of her expenses, and this local phenom would benefit from our support seeing as how she is so close to her goal of $1500. Check it out and help fund the future.
