    2013 Cal Cup’s Penultimate Weekend
    27th August 2013

Sara Clafferty’s Cal Cup campaign rolled on this past weekend with huge wins at Winters and Vacaville. The result made three in a row for the Pinnacle presented by Argon 18 rider as she assumed the lead for Pro/1/2/3 Women.

The Women’s category tightened up significantly as previous leader Jane Despas (Leopard-Saporro) was unable to pick up any points and slipped one place. After all was said and done, there are now just five points covering the top three riders with Christina Hughes (Hub Coffee Roasters p/b Tahoe Carson Radiology) joining Despas in second.

Adam Switters (Team Mike’s Bikes p/b Incase) extended his lead for Pro/1/2 Men by taking a win at Winters and third at Vacaville. Switters has mathematically eliminated all but four other riders in Christopher Harland-Dunaway (Marc Pro-Strava), Brandon Trafton (Team Mike’s Bikes p/b Incase), Colin Joyce (California Giant/Specialized), and Justin Rossi (Marc Pro-Strava).

A crucial victory for Switters in the Cal Cup battle and another criterium dominated by Mike's Bikes p/b Incase.

Harland-Dunaway’s challenge from second place was dented after only securing 7 points this weekend. He sits 25 points adrift going into the final weekend but said, after his win at San Ardo, he will remain in the game should the overall win remain in reach.

Current Master 35+ 1/2/3 category leader Jason Grefrath (Lange Twins Winery Racing Team) holds on after securing 7 points at Winters. His lead sits at 14 points. Michael Buckley (Folsom Bike/VW/Raley’s) leaped into second place with the second step of the podium at Winters. Meanwhile, Kevin Metcalfe (Team Specialized Racing Masters) simply launched to third overall and into contention with a double-win weekend.

Everyone has a mathematical chance to take the Category 3 Cal Cup this coming weekend. New leader Eric Brickler (Data Driven Athlete Racing) took the win at Vacaville. Metromint Cycling’s Michael Miller drops to second overall but just 3 points behind Brickler. Joseph Chicoine (Stephen’s Bicycles) in third leads fifteen riders covered by 10 points, all of whom are within 20 points of at least a tie for first place.
