    Esparto Time Trial
    1 September 2013

Katie Hall (Metromint Cycling) won today’s 18-mile Esparto Time Trial in a time of 42’21.5″. The result kept the 2013 Cal Cup, for Women Pro/1/2/3, alive until Giro di San San Francisco. Jane Despas (Leopard-Saporro) also finished ahead of Sara Clafferty (Pinnacle p/b Argon 18) and just those three will settle matters tomorrow.

The Women’s 1/2/3 field saw the return to racing of Pinnacle presented by Argon 18 riders Jennifer Zierke and Amy Thornquist. Both suffered “broken ass” injuries in recent weeks; Thornquist had fractured her pelvis in three places whilst Zierke, who coined that broken ass quote, had broken her coccyx.

To their credit, Zierke took sixth as Thornquist set the third fastest time for Women 1/2/3. Mary Maroon (SBRacing) was second.

Justin Rossi (Marc Pro-Strava) took 36’56.8″ to cover the course, in the day’s fastest time, and win in Men Pro/1/2. Teenager Zeke Mostov (Slipstream-Craddock) was second, 76 seconds off the pace, whilst Adam Switters (Team Mike’s Bikes p/b Incase) took third just 22 seconds further back.

Switters also took the win at yesterday’s Challenge Challenge Road Race to close out the Cal Cup, after Chris Harland-Dunaway had a perfect storm of flat tyres.

Elsewhere for the Cal Cup, Eric Brickler (Data Driven Athlete) finished third in Category 3. Along with his top-ten finish at Challenge, Brickler wrests the Cup over his idle challengers.

For Master 35+ 1/2/3, top-challengers raced at neither Challenge nor Esparto leaving the Cal Cup for Jason Grefrath (Lange Twins Winery).
