    Sagebrush Cyclocross Series
    Truckee Bike Park • 13 October 2013

    Always Racing Hard
Hollie McGovern (Real Wheels/Cycleution) had a two-win weekend by taking the Women’s A race of the Sagebrush Cyclocross Series. Riding her usual race of chasing even when in first, the Real Wheels racer fended off Erica Greif (Reno Wheelmen) who had a difficult race with two flats.

The Men’s A competition started to look to be a re-match of the previous day’s El Dorado Hills CX race. Keith Hillier (Team Rambuski Law) and Jared Kessler (Marc Pro-Strava…yes, Marc Pro-Strava) lined up together at the start. However, Kessler broke his pedal getting off the line.

Hillier still had competition in the form of Chris McGovern (Real Wheels/Cycleution) and Nick Schaffner (Marc Pro-Strava).

Instinct took over after Kessler re-joined the field with Hillier chasing any move up front. This gave Hillier a large gap to second and led to the TRL-racer taking a dominant win over Chris McGovern and Jason Walker (Folsom Bikes/VW/Raley’s).

    “He’s a Lap Down!”
“[I] followed Nick Schaffner for the first couple laps,” reported Hillier, “and traded off pulls with some other guys. We were in a small group on the front and breaking away. Then Jared Kessler had a mechanical on the first lap.

“[Kessler] jumped back into the race and attacked our group. It was just second nature to follow anything that goes up the road so I got on his wheel and tried to hold on to him. He’s just amazing through the corners.

“Chris McGovern was solo behind us giving me a reason to keep going hard. Meanwhile, Kessler was giving me crap about how horrible I am at taking corners.

“When Kessler first attacked it was just instinct to follow him. Then McGovern yelled at us ‘He’s a lap down!’ Well, I’m already attacking so I may as well go.”

Hillier was grateful to the cyclocross gods; both he and Kessler suffered mechanicals on separate days and were able to share the spoils of the weekend.

    That’s a ‘Cross Course?
The Truckee Bike Park course was unique in its combination of BMX track, pump track, and traditional ‘cross course. Pursists would frown but it had its challenges, difficulties, and a good dose of fun.

“Yeah, there’s a couple of banked corners that I am accustomed to,” continued part-time track racer Hillier, “and there’s the awesome pump track with sprinklers and mud like a true ‘cross race. There were also loose corners to really push your handling skills.

“The BMX track was scary because you’re able to catch some air and I tried to hold back from the spectator encouragement.”

All in all, it was a good ‘cross day. Sagebrush had a great turn-out with a good number of juniors. Next up for the series is the Clayton Middle School venue on 26 October.
