Two-time Norcal Premier Series Team Champions, Velo Sports Group (VSG), is pleased to announce its next evolution. After successful seasons of 2012 (Stevens Bikes p/b Pactimo) and 2013 (Pinnacle p/b Argon 18), Velo Sports Group is expanding its roster from eight to twelve riders. Velo Sports Group is thrilled to participate in developing and preparing women for higher levels of racing. With the departure of 2013 riders Amy Thornquist to DNA Cycling and the departure of Sara Headley and Emma Grant to TIBCO, VSG has room for developing new talent and is excited to announce its 2014 roster.
“Each year the make-up of this team has been unique, with different strengths, potential talent and personalities. The 2014 roster represents what we believe to be exceptional women, first in terms of character and next in terms of talent and potential. With this team you know what to expect each season,” said Bill Nicely. “Of course they will be competitive. Of course they will add excitement to races. We are not content with that alone. These women, by their choosing, will pick up and carry the responsibility of sports ambassadorship and professionalism demonstrated by other particular women in NorCal and previous members of this team. We would like to continue to be part of the advancement of both the sport in general and more particularly the advancement of women within the sport. ”

2014 looks to be even brighter with the appointment of Larry Nolan as Director Sportif. Larry, comes to the team after many years of leading several development programs including the Specialized Juniors team, the Early Bird Training Series, and the USA Cycling Development camp. Through our first two team camps Larry has demonstrated a professional level of vision, attention to detail and focus on multi-faceted development. While VSG has had two very successful years of competing in Northern California with several championships (State and National), race wins, podiums, series victories and demonstrated sports ambassadorship there is opportunity to advance the sport and develop riders. Larry will be key to that vision and the peloton benefits from his presence.
“I am excited to partner with Larry in providing development opportunities for women in Northern California and beyond”, said Bill Nicely, founder of Velo Sports Group. “We have been very fortunate to field a successful team so far but I began to think of longevity and next steps. I needed a higher level of leadership than I could provide as the team was outpacing my learning curve. I was nervous. Larry provides an immediate jump in leadership ability, love for the sport and demonstrated ability to develop talent. Now, I couldn’t be more excited and confident about the future.”
Tony Snell joins Larry in team leadership as Assistant Director. Tony is a long time racer who has European racing experience as junior as well as years of industry experience. Tony’s supportive and mentoring demeanor has been in evidence on the sidelines last year and at both team camps so far this season.
“I am so looking forward to the 2014 racing season. My passion to assist junior and women bicycle racers with their dreams and aspirations has not waned over the 27 years that I’ve been in this sport,” said Nolan. ” In many ways the Team Specialized Juniors and the Velo Sports Group Women have similar philosophies, both on and off the bike. We’ll do our part to make racing fast and fun through executed teamwork and sacrifice. This is a great team of women and I’m honored to be helping them reach their team and individual goals”
