A semi-anonymous but reliable source recently informed the NorCal Cycling News of a surprise handover of staple NCNCA race promoter Velo Promo to a multi-national race promotions corporation. While the identity of the company is still to be confirmed, the purported one-plus million dollar transaction in sale of the company into new hands will represent a huge change in Northern California road racing events.
Apparently, the Soulsbyville-based company was approached by the interested buying party after the latter became interested in some of the “epic” courses for which Velo Promo is well-known, but failed to secure permission to promote additional races at one or more of these locations. After continued frustrated pursuit, the corporation decided the easiest solution would be to buy out Velo Promo and the rights to all of its races that appear on the NCNCA race calendar. Whether the epics like the Copperopolis Road Race or the Leesville Gap Road Race would remain simple local races is now doubtful, as interest in these routes appears intense enough that NRC status or listing in another national-level series is thought to be possible. Stay tuned for further detail as more information becomes available or the deal goes fully public.
