Maripose, v. /mah’ree’pôs/ To pose for a photograph, strictly at the Mariposa Women’s Stage Race.
Etymology: American-English, circa 2013
British and American scientists are conducting research into the activity of Mariposing. The pursuit first appeared in the Far Western United States during its namesake bicycle event, the Mariposa Women’s Stage Race. Historians are want to argue the point delicately but the belief is the term was coined separately and simultaneously by racers from Velo Bella. Since its first documented occurrence, scientist point out, even inadvertent Mariposing occurs. That is, racers adopt a Maripose yet are unaware it conforms to indeterminate definitions. The juxtaposition between hard driving bicycle-racing and hamming it up for the camera are best illustrated with the following documented examples.
Congratulations and well done to all the racers at the Mariposa Women’s Stage Race. Thank you for racing out there!
