In a surprise move NCNCA President, Bill Nicely, announced NCNCA’s secession from USA Cycling effective immediately. Citing internal political pressure and a desire to destroy OBRA Nicely sent the following statement to his executive team.
“Effective immediately, NCNCA is no longer affiliated with USA Cycling. Officials and promoters commitments will still be honored but we are now incorporated as a separate corporate body and will announce a new set of services to the riders of Northern California and Nevada on Monday morning. Until that time USA Cycling licenses and rules will apply to all races. We look forward to the next step in the evolution of racing in California.”
The NCNCA was formerly an independent entity and only joined USA Cycling over a decade ago after much debate. Several sources, that have requested not to be named, have speculated that the move is being funded by Tailwind Sports, and possibly even USA Cycling, who are looking to establish an entity outside of IOC’s purview which they can build into an American style sports league along the lines of MLB, NBA, or USFL.
When asked about the possibility the NCNCA was a pawn in the ever increasing tensions between UCI, USA Cycling, and AGCIP Nicely had the following reply.
“I have no doubt I’m being used. But I’m going to use them right back. I just want to destroy OBRA. “
