Don’t expect us to cover many of these. Fremont is close to my house and I figured it would be interesting to see who was showing up for the Pre-Season races. As I pulled up to the race, there were about 7 laps to go, a break was being reeled back in and who was at the front but Rand Miller. He is nothing if not prolific and consistent - his complaints of mediocrity and poor form are really just the tricks of an experienced journeyman waiting to cut your throat (metaphorically that is.)
It was a size-able group and apparently they had been off for a good chunk of the race. The remaining six laps saw several groups try to make a separation, with nothing able to stick on the flat, wide, sweeping course. Logan Loader won decisively (unofficial) with a great sprint at the finish, there is a little interview with him at the end of the video below. Mary Maroon looked like the top women’s finisher (unofficial), if not the only women’s finisher, in the combined field. I think the combined field is the perfect way for NorCal women to find their fitness in order to compete with the big guns (Tibco, HTC, etc) that show up for the Spring Classics in our area. The results are unofficial (as noted above), as I took off right after the start to beat my 4:30 curfew.
Other items of note: McGuire was out in force. Logan said he’s going to a U25 team based out of Chicago sponsored by Verizon. That is doubly cool since VZW will HOPEFULLY be announcing their iPhone this week. Roman K. was looking pretty strong, as were several of the Specialized juniors.
There were few faces I couldn’t get since i was trying to get some shots on the Flip camera but you all can fill in the blanks. I might try to throw up a slow motion shot of the finish later if I get time - this is a quickly edited version for your viewing pleasure. (I can’t embed the player since Hernando is wisely restricting my access so here is a direct link
